Gone With The Wind Lamps
To those of us who love them, own one or want one,(and don't we all), they are called Gone With The Wind lamps. This style of lamp is also known, however, as a parlor lamp and banquet lamp.
The style is said to have begin in Western Europe and is called Art Nouveau. These lamps were originally imported from Dresden, Germany. The Art Nouveau style is very ornamental and asymmetrical. It uses twining, twisting plant tendrils, flowers, sinuous lines and s-curves. The lamps had removable fonts. Both the ball shades and lamp base vases are highly decorated and hand painted and may be heavily embellished with decorations. The globe-like font and ball shades are supported by pierced gilt metal fittings and four paw feet.
The overall look of a Gone With The Wind lamp is one of quality and elegance. Their beauty makes them extremely fitting for a main hallway, library, bedroom, or sitting room of any home. Historically, of course, these lamps were kerosene and typically they had a 10 inch round globe shade.
Original antique parlor Gone With The Wind lamps are often for sale and may bring as much as $1,500 each. You are sure to find one on this site. It is said that the Gone With The Wind movie set during the 1860's actually pre-dates the appearance of these types of lamps.
