Vivien Leigh's British parents were living in India when she was born on November 5, 1913. She will, of course, always be remembered for her role as Scarlett O'Hara in the 1939 movie of all time, Gone With The Wind. She won an oscar for her performance in this epic movie set during the American Civil War. Soon her patriotism sent her home to England when the nation was pushed into World War 11. In 1940 she starred in Waterloo Bridge and in 1941, That Hamilton Woman.
Vivien was also a very talented stage actress. Tennessee William's play A Streetcar Named Desire was a perfect role for Vivien. The Blanche DuBois character was made for her and in 1951 she gave a brilliant performance in the film adaptation and it won her a second Academy Award. Vivien suffered with manic depression throughout most of her adult life. Many feel that the emotional toll of this complicated character role caused this disease to worsen for her.
Vivien took her stage name, Leigh, from her first husband. They had one daughter, Suzanne. Most remember her twenty year romance and marriage to actor Laurence Olivier.
Sadly, Vivien died in 1967. Her death was caused tuberculosis reoccurring. Olivier was said to be overcome with sorrow even though they had been divorced when her death came. He assisted with her funeral arrangement and sat by her dead body for a long time. In honor of her life, London's West End dimmed the lights.
